It is against state law to tamper with a utility meter. People who steal utilities are actually stealing from all the consumers on the system. We ask to help us find those who may be involved in stealing electricity, natural gas, water or wastewater services.
If you know of such activity, please call us immediately at 256-232-1440 during normal business hours or after hours. Please remember that tampering with a utility meter is not only unlawful but also very dangerous.
New Deposit and Service Fees
The Athens City Council has passed a new deposit and service fee schedule for Athens Utilities. Amoung the changes are fees for reconnection of service and returned check fees. Click here to view the current schedule of deposits and service fees
New Utility Bill Design is on it's way.
Starting around March 1st, 2010 the bill statement that Athens Utilities customers receive will be different than the current postcard bill.
- All billing and due dates will remain the same
- The bill statement will be in a envelope
- The bill statement will be a sheet of paper instead of a postcard
- A return envelope will be included with the bill statement. (Customers who use automatic bank draft will not receive a return envelope)
- When possible, mulitple bills to the same location/customer will be mailed in a single envelope.
- Beginning in March 2010 we will no longer send out Late Notices. Your utility billing statement will be the only notice you receive concerning your Utility Bill.
The new billing statement is currently in the design process. Once the design is completed we will post an example on this website and display examples at our customer service office located at 508 South Jefferson Street.

Alabama One Call is a non-profit organization established under Alabama Act 94-487. Anyone engaging in excavation activities is required to notify underground facility owners prior to the start of excavation. Alabama One Call helps streamline this process by providing a "one call" service allowing excavators to notify area utility companies quickly and efficiently.
